DIY Different

While gardening, cooking, and home improvement are what most people think of as do-it-yourself, or DIY, in a more general sense anything that you can pay someone else to do or buy ready-made, but do yourself, is do-it-yourself. Let’s DIY Different!

Whether you’re an incessant reader, enjoy binge-watching television shows, or love a long videogame session, it’s storytelling that drives many of our hobbies and passions. If you’d like to take this one step further and are looking to participate in the storytelling yourself, one fantastic possibility is through tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or Numenera. Grab yourself a few friends, some paper and pencils, a set of dice, check out the Dungeons and Dragons Player’s Handbook (& Dungeon Master’s Guide, & maybe the Monster Manual), and you’re ready to roll!

Now that you’ve taken a deep dive into storytelling through roleplaying, maybe you’d like to zhuzh things up a bit and create some character miniatures, furniture, or landscapes for your collaborative stories. Start with Tinkercad for Dummies to learn how to create 3D models for your creations, then try out 3D Printing for Dummies to make them all a reality!

What’s next in your quest to bring these tales to life? Why, costumes of course! If you’re trying out the life of a hangry magic-wielder or an ethically responsible tinkerer, both The Costume Making Guide and Cosplay Crash Course are good places to begin, whether you’re looking to sew and stitch things from scratch or mix and match found clothing and accessories.

Now that you and your pals have taken this hands-on storytelling to the next level, maybe y’all should share your adventures with the rest of us and try out streaming your endeavors on a platform like Twitch, or recording your exploits as a Podcast (everybody’s got one)! Twitch for Dummies and Podcasting for Dummies are both great places to get yourself oriented.

Many of these topics also have great videos tutorials available through Learning Go forth, and tell your magnificent stories!
