A Lifetime of Reading Finally Pays Off!

Sure, reading has been shown to improve empathy in adults and emotional intelligence in children. Plus it’s affordable and enjoyable, and you feel, learn and experience so much. But what about making you the envy of your friends? Has reading ever bought the next round of beer? Where are the fabulous prizes?

That’s all about to change!

Introducing the Bookish Trivia Trilogy, a trio of literary trivia nights hosted in local bars this coming October 2, 8 and 16th as part of Booktobefest 2018. For the past three years, trivia buffs and newbies alike have flocked to our fun free pub trivia nights each October. This year, acceding to popular demand, we’re tilting the field in favor of the people who keep us in business: readers!

No, you don’t have to be an English major (though consider this payback on the naysayers if you are: “Who’s winning a totebag full of books and tchotchkes now, Dad!?“)  We’ll have a wide variety of questions, snooty and popular, but you will not be subjected to the rigors of the Math round, or the indignity of the Sports round.

If you’ve never done trivia before, consider this a safe place to try it out. Come with friends – the more the merrier (limit 8 members per team) – or come alone, and we’ll help pair you with other readers. These events regularly fill up, so arrive early to get a table and a drink, and limber up your frontal lobes.

It all starts on October 2, 7 p.m., at Naked City Brewery & Taphouse in Greenwood (facebook event), followed by the sequel on October 8, 7 p.m. at Optimism Brewing on Capitol Hill (facebook event), and culminating on October 16, 7 p.m. at Floating Bridge Brewing in the University District (facebook event). And don’t miss all the other great Booktoberfest events coming up, including Karaoke, Happy Hours, Drink & Draw, Vampire movies, poetry readings and Spooky stories in bars: check out the whole schedule here. And look for our Booktoberfest coasters at your local library, or in a bar near you! Fill it in with a favorite book, and tweet it to @SPLBuzz & #Booktoberfest.

That familiar chill in the air, those reddish tints starting to appear in the leaves, that playful note of pumpkin spice latte asserting itself amidst the less seasonal scents of marijuana and Axe body spray on city streets: it can only mean one thing. Another Booktoberfest has arrived! Each October, dazed and confused from the flurry of Summer reading, librarians emerge blinking into the autumnal light, and head for the bar. We hope you’ll join us in pubs and bars all across the city, to share books and stories, songs and games. Come out and play! Here’s a quick rundown of what’s in store this year: Continue reading “BOOKTOBERFEST 2017 IS HERE!”
