A Peek at Peak Picks – February 2024

Check out the ten books we’re adding to Peak Picks in February!

In fiction, dozens of authors – including Margaret Atwood, Douglas Preston, Tommy Orange and Celeste Ng – are the forces behind individual tenants in a New York City apartment building during the height of the COVID lockdown in Fourteen Days; Hisashi Kashiwai follows a father-daughter duo who recreate meals for customers based on treasured memories in the Japanese cozy mystery The Kamogawa Food Detectives; Tia Williams features a woman who moves to New York and falls for a musician despite a Harlem Renaissance-era curse that hovers over them in A Love Song for Ricki Wilde; Mariely Lares weaves Mesoamerican mythology and Mexican history in this reimagining of Zorro with a heroic warrior sorceress at the center in Sun of Blood and Ruin; and Tommy Orange traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in the prequel and sequel to There There with his sophomore novel, Wandering Stars.

In nonfiction, Yashica Dutt recounts how she survived India’s caste system and how it’s influencing U.S. society in Coming Out as Dalit; Chris Balakrishnan and Matt Wasowski, co-founders of the global science organization Nerd Nite, bring readers a collection of wacky, yet fascinating STEM topics in How to Win Friends and Infuence Fungi; Seattle’s Becky Selengut teaches home cooks how to fall in love with sunchokes, rutabaga, eggplant, and more in Misunderstood Vegetables; NPR’s Rhaina Cohen consider the thrill, intimacy and commitment found through meaningful friendships in The Other Significant Others; and Charles Duhigg (The Power of Habit) explores what makes conversations work and unlocks the secret language of connection in Supercommunicators.

In 2023, more than 147,000 Peak Picks were checked out, an increase of nearly 4% from the previous year; they’re so popular that the top 10 adult fiction and adult nonfiction books in print are all Peak Picks. And we’re on track to reach one million checkouts in 2024!
