Welcome to Awards Season

Can you feel it in the air? Have you seen the announcements? Literary awards season* is upon us again!

On September 9th, the shortlist for the Man Booker prize was announced. On September 15th, the National Book Foundation finished announcing the 40 longlisted titles for the National Book Award in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people’s literature categories. On September 20th Kirkus Reviews announced the 2016 finalists for the Kirkus Awards in fiction, nonfiction, and young readers’ literature. And on September 21st, the longlists for the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence for fiction and nonfiction were announced.

Veterans Day: Informational resources and recommended reading

While the Library will be closed in observance of Veterans Day this Wednesday (November 11), we would like to highlight some materials and upcoming events that may be of interest to Seattle’s veteran community.

On Thursday, November 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., we will host a Drop-In for Veteran Services event at the Central Library. A veteran specialist from Supportive Services for Veteran Families will be on hand to assist veterans with issues such as housing, counseling, and transportation. This event is free and does not require registration (though space is limited, and we encourage you arrive early to guarantee a seat). Anyone who cannot attend the Nov. 19 session is encouraged to attend the second session, also at the Central Library, on Thursday, December 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Continue reading “Veterans Day: Informational resources and recommended reading”
